Discovering Charleston's Island Town

Bike path, Daniel Island

Daniel Island has been deemed Charleston's Island Town. This little slice of paradise is nestled between the Cooper and Wando rivers, near the Charleston harbor. I often refer to it as "Drama Free Island" because of the tranquil scenery here. My own little oasis, the island has so much to offer from its rich history and humble origins to its modern business and sports facilities.

Whether running, walking or biking, I enjoy the miles of trails that wind along the river through the grand oaks and across the tidal marsh. The many parks and recreation areas throughout the community provide enjoyment for kids of all ages. From one to ninety-nine, everyone is sure to find an activity.

Home to the Family Circle Cup and The Charleston Battery, Daniel Island almost always has an event to attend if you are so inclined. Including tennis, concerts, soccer, craft shows, 5k charity races and much more, Daniel Island has a lot to offer.

Did I mention amazing cuisine? Well, let me tell you about a few of our wonderful restaurants. We have quite the selection. From sushi to pizza and just about everything in between, we have it. My top three choices are Sermet's Courtyard, Vespa Pizzeria and Wasabi.

Sermet's offers a terrific Mediterranean menu. The food is always amazing. Since it is located just up the street from the pier, an after dinner walk can be a perfect end to the day. Vespa Pizzeria has much more than pizza. Their arugula and beet salad gets my vote every time. And last but not least Wasabi is of course a wonderful Japanese restaurant. Sushi is their specialty. I like it all. One can never have too much sushi in my opinion. There are many more tasty spots on the island, but these are my "go to" places.

Children can ride their bikes to school and stop at the local frozen yogurt shop for a treat on the way home. People walk and ride their bikes to the grocery store. We have a farmers market on Thursdays throughout the spring and summer months. Although we are located just fifteen minutes from the Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island and downtown Charleston, we are close to everything but far enough away to maintain that small town feel. When I come home each day it is like I automatically convert to “island time”.

I am truly blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Historic Charleston

Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Rich with both culture and history, the city is a must see on anyone's list of places to visit. From the cobblestone streets to the numerous churches, there is no shortage of things to do and see in the Holy City.

The smell of jasmine fuses together with the salt air and various aromas emerging from the many restaurants that line the streets. With each turn you can find beauty in every form that makes all of your senses dance. The sounds of horse-drawn carriages and tour guides hum in the background.

Art galleries and gift shops galore entice you to stop in and take a look with cool air and open doors. There are sweet grass basket weavers diligently sewing and creating amazing works of art all over the city. Be assured that Charleston has something to offer people from all walks of life. Young and old alike, everyone will enjoy a little southern hospitality and charm.

Exploring Folly and Bowen's Island

There is so much more to Folly than just the beach. As I approached the pier, I could hear a soft hum of laughter mixed with the sound of waves lapping against the sand. There was the distinctive call of the many beach birds peeking through the background noise frequently. I stepped onto the pier and the first thing I noticed was the unusual teal color of the water. I have never seen the water this color here before. It is absolutely gorgeous! The combination of the sea air and the visual beauty are almost intoxicating. After visiting the beach you can make your way to Center Street to visit some of the many colorful shops and restaurants that line the sidewalks.

Old school!

Morning at Magnolia Gardens

After driving down the long winding road leading to the entrance of Magnolia Gardens we are met with a sweet smell that fills the morning air. I can't distinguish exactly which of the many beautiful flowers is responsible for giving off such a wonderful aroma. I decided quickly that it is the combination of many things that have come together to make this unique perfume-like fragrance possible.

Before entering the gardens we can hear a screeching sound. Over and over again the screeching continues. As we make our way through the entrance we see the source of the sound. Several big beautiful peacocks are showing off their feathers and yes, screeching. We get our peacock photos and move on. There is so much to see.

We pass the main house and make our way to the long white bridge. The view is breathtaking. Following the path we continue on into the grounds. After our exploration of the maze and garden we enter the gift shop, filled with souvenirs for everyone. The gift shop is air conditioned and a welcome break from the heat.

Next stop - the petting zoo! There is a rooster sitting atop the entrance like a door greeter. There are goats, deer, ducks, chickens and peacocks roaming free inside the large fenced area. There is a reptile building and various cages throughout for the other animals that aren't allowed to roam so freely. It is truly an amazing experience to pet the deer and goat. The peacocks aren't quite so friendly.

I recommend making an entire day of it when planning your trip. They have a picnic area where you can bring a lunch or buy something from the snack bar.  There is so much to see, smell, hear and experience. A wonderful place to take the entire family or just get away from it all. Magnolia Gardens is a must see for anyone visiting the Charleston area.

A Pleasant Experience!

When I arrived at the park located just under the Ravenel bridge, I was hit with this wonderful smell.  A mix of jasmine and pluff mud creates an unusual salty sweet aroma. The sounds of birds surround me as I make my way out to the fishing pier.

I pass a lovely cafe and gift shop on my right. Just ahead there are several men setting up for a morning of fishing and relaxation. I began talking to a couple of them and quickly realized why Charleston is known as the friendliest city. They were part of a group of military veterans who meet at the pier on a regular basis. Eager to share their stories, they made me feel welcome.

The park at the Mt. Pleasant pier is a beautiful addition to the Charleston area. With a visitor center, cafe, gift shop and much more, it is definitely a place to put on your itinerary. Visiting the pier is always a wonderful experience.
